Batik Chenille Scarf

Sewing: Using the walking foot and stitch length 3, start stitching in the middle through all layers. Continue stitching parallel rows around 3/8" apart until 3/8" to 5/8" from the edges.

Cutting: Slash the stitching channels on both sides with the slash cutter, being careful not to cut through the center layer. Cutting through all layers about 4" from the ends creates the fringed ends.

Washing: Using a few old towels machine wash and dry with scarf. The use of fabric softener is helpful as it softens the scarf even more. Be sure to check your lint trap after drying.

Long Scarf Version: Long scarf base prep: Cut diagonal pieces desired width for scarf. Combine two of the base in the following manner.
  • Using two ends with selvages intact, overlap by ¼ to ½ inch.
  • Using a zigzag stitch, bury each selvage under a line of stitching.
The result of this process is to create a base piece that won't be snagged by the channel cutter when the scarf is slashed.
Cut piece to desired length of the scarf and proceed as usual, overlapping pieces to create the layers.

    Helpful Hints:
  • Use the edge of the walking foot as a sewing guide
  • Try using multiple colors of batiks
  • Use fewer layers for a lighter weight scarf

  • Preparation: On the bias cut the fabric into strips 5" in width. This should yield at least two strips around 60" long and enough for 5 layers of fabric. Use these strips for the middle and the bottom. The bottom layer must be long enough to assist your sewing (this is against the feed dog). The middle layer needs to long enough so that the cutter does not slash through. The rest of the layers are made up with the shorter strips. Slightly overlap the shorter pieces together (don't seam the short pieces together). Pin through all layers keeping one end even spacing pins 6 to 8 inches apart, at a 90 degree angle to stitching.
